You Can Be Successful Through Young Farmers Program

You Can Be Successful Through Young Farmers Program – YOUNG FARMERS PROGRAM (YFP) is the solution to the decreasing number of Filipinos engaged in agriculture and fishery enterprise by turning agriculture and fisheries graduates into entrepreneurs and viable partners in modernization.

A brainchild of Senator Ramon Magsaysay, chairman of the Congressional Oversight Committee on Agricultural and Fisheries Modernization, the YFP encourages young agriculture and fishery graduates of state universities and colleges (SUCs) to go into agribusiness. YFP will nurture them to become entrepreneurs and strong partners in nation building. The program also provides an avenue for the enhancement and development of agribusiness and entrepreneurial skills of young agricultural enthusiasts and budding entrepreneurs.

YOUNG FARMERS PROGRAM (YFP) is the solution to the decreasing number of Filipinos engaged in agriculture and fishery enterprise by turning agriculture and fisheries graduates into entrepreneurs and viable partners in modernization.

Under the program, the government is committed to help entrepreneurs to secure loans representing 60 percent of the total capital needed by their proposed agriculture-related enterprises. The 25 percent of the capital needed will be awarded as a grant by the program which the recipient will not have to repay. While the remaining 15 percent has to be raise by the proponent as his share or equity.

Applicants may be male or female, between 21 and 39 years old; a graduate of agriculture or of any course but currently engaged in agribusiness; physically, mentally and emotionally fit to undertake the activities of the program; not related with the recommending and approving parties up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity; of good community standing (moral character), and must be willing to undergo training conducted by the DA, other concerned agencies, QUEDANCOR and schools accredited by CHED or TESDA.

Interested individuals or group can present project proposals on coir decorticating production, beekeeping, duck raising, broiler production, poultry egg production, tilapia production, mudcrab production, cattle fattening, hog fattening, swine production, goat production, papaya production, oyster mushroom cultivation and banana mushroom spawn production, chayote production, vegetable seedling production, mango production, Arabica coffee processing and export quality peanut production, to name a few.

YFP will select agri-based project proposals for funding ranging from Php 50,000 to Php 300,000. Aside from capital support, the selected beneficiaries will be provided with full production support by YFP along with additional technical know-how and land area for production, in order for the young agriculture graduates and budding entrepreneurs to become successful agribusinessmen in the future.

Since its launching few years back, YFP beneficiaries have now reaping the fruits of their labor like Brian Quirol of Baybay, Leyte, who maintains a nursery growing and selling planting materials of fruit trees; David Dumlao who raises ducks in Isabela; Mikhael Chavez, who went into papaya production in Oriental Mindoro and now regularly supplying big supermarket chains in Metro Manila; and Raffy Espiritu of La Union who has made good profits from his peanut project.
