Financial Grants for Small Tourism-Related Businesses

The Department of Tourism is now offering grants for small tourism-related businesses under its Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco-Tourism (GREET) program. So far, around 50 small businesses nationwide have already been approved under the GREET program with over P12 million released to entrepreneurs with feasible tourism-related businesses.

The program seeks to enhance livelihood opportunities for promising entrepreneurs who can best explore the inherent tourist-drawing potential of eco-tourism sites. The program help small-time shops that offer local delicacy, souvenirs and other eco-tourism-related activities. With the GREET program, countryside tourism will be further promoted.

Since the implementation of the program in 2008, DOT has received 410 proposals from entrepreneurs whose businesses range from production of pasalubong, woodcarvings as souvenirs, small-time kayaking tours, among others.

Under the program, an entrepreneur who has a feasible enterprise will get P50,000 to P100,000 cash grant, depending on the type business, to augment capital, buy inventory and equipment, or for other needs of the business.

The DOT will closely monitor the funded projects and give advice to the entrepreneur if needed to ensure success.

Many SMEs have already benefited from the program, including the production of pasalubong in Anda, Bohol; wood carvings in Loboc, Bohol; kayaking in Danao and Bantayan Island, Cebu; whale shark watching in Donsol, Sorsogon; and in Chocolate Hills in Bohol, among others.

Other projects that will receive funding under the program include the wooden boats for rent at Barangay Lake Danao, Ormoc City; the construction of motorized banca in Himokilan Island, Hindang, Leyte; tour guiding in Cambaro Caves, Macrohon, Southern Leyte; canteen and catering services in Daay River, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; and a floating restaurant by the Basey Tourism Services Association in Sohoton Caves, Basey, Samar.
